If you’re looking to accurately replicate yourself in the game, good luck.ĮA Sports has proven in other series (like FIFA and Madden, and even in the last Tiger Woods game two years ago) that it can provide players with potent character creation tools, but Rory McIlroy PGA Tour takes several steps backward.
GameFace is not a part of Rory McIlroy PGA Tour, and you can’t alter a players facial features or body parts. Players are allowed to choose from 11 different “head” types, three different body types, and eight different hairstyles, among a few other attributes. The biggest problem with the career mode is the incredibly restrictive character creation suite, which is easily the worst in any sports game this generation.

Fortunately, you can choose to play full rounds, but you cannot alter the length of events. You cannot pick and choose which events you want to play in and there is no calendar to see what events are upcoming, leaving players to just aimlessly follow the preset schedule.

Tour Pro Career bafflingly defaults to a quick-round setting which limits players to just a few select holes per round, which is kind of like playing a Madden or NBA 2K franchise mode with 1-minute quarters. The Tour Pro Career mode, in which players begin by earning their PGA Tour card in the Web.com Tour finals, is uninspiring at best. Navigating menus can also be a chore as the game seems to noticeably lag and miss inputs at times. EA Sports has virtually eliminated load times between holes, which helps to speed up the pace of a round significantly, but there is noticeable texture pop-in during hole fly-bys. Andrews, styled in game complete with Open Championship scoreboards, looks stunning just as it does in real life. The game’s visuals, for the most part, are a solid step-up from the previous generation, but overall performance is a mixed bag. Even with all the assists off, the game feels far too forgiving - you’ll likely be splitting every fairway and attacking every pin in calm conditions, and the penalties for finding the rough or hitting out of a bunker or a bad lie aren’t nearly stiff enough.
The new analog swing lacks some of the nuance of previous games, and it’s difficult to precisely feel how much power you’re applying with each shot, which takes some depth out of the game. Players can choose from a classic three-click swing, or opt for the more realistic analog swing, and mix and match different assists like mid-flight ball spin and power boosts, or putt previews. Series veterans will feel right at home playing Rory McIlroy PGA Tour, as the core gameplay mechanics remain in place.
